Electrical Savings – Good for the Environment and Your Wallet

Saving electricity will save you money, at the same it is better for the environment. Electricity is both financially and environmentally costly.  By “greening” our electrical consumption, we can lighten the impact to our wallets and to our planet.  Below are few ideas on how a qualified electrician can help you save money and reduce your carbon footprint:

Programmable Thermostat

Consider swapping your old thermostat for a Programmable Thermostat. This will allow you to create settings where the heat/air conditioning will turn off or decrease during times when nobody occupies the home. Programming these thermostats is very simple, however, if you don’t want to learn you can always install a thermostat, like Nest Thermostat. These thermostats are capable of learning what temperature you like and when you are not home. It even learns how your home heats and cools, so it only uses the energy as it needs, this will help you save electricity and ultimately help you save money on your utility bill.

LED and CFL Lights

Get in the habit of switching the lights off when you leave a room in your home and when the bulbs burn out, consider replacing these bulbs with Compact fluorescent or LED lights. You will find you save time and money as less replacements are needed and you will feel good knowing these new lights use less energy.

Dimmer Switches

Dimmer switches are a nice touch. They can soften the light level in a home, save you money on your electric bill and can significantly increase the life of your light bulbs. This makes a big difference if you happen to use expensive bulbs, or if they are in hard to reach locations. Below is a chart to illustrate how installing a dimmer can add up to big savings.

Energy Efficient Appliances

Choose Energy Efficient Appliances when purchasing a new furnace, dishwasher, refrigerator and washing machines. Look for the “Energy Star” label to ensure the product is recognized for its energy efficiency. These appliances will help save on electricity use and even minimize the amount of detergent/soap required during cycles.

Other Creative Ideas

As your meatloaf or casserole is baking in the oven, now is your chance to prepare dessert to put in the oven immediately after. Save electricity by baking both your dinner and dessert right after each other. It saves time and energy in having to pre-heat your oven twice.

Do you iron a shirt every day for work? Try picking your outfits a few days in advance so you can iron several shirts at one time. While the iron is hot, why not? Iron in bulk and save time and electricity in doing so too!
